Martin Luther King Jr., prime mover of the Montgomery bus boycott, keynote speaker at the March on Washington, and youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate, speaks about racial discrimination. Unquestionably, King's policy of nonviolent protest was a dominant force in the civil rights movement during its decade of greatest achievement from 1957 to 1968.

SPECIAL: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in His Own Words

Today is the federal holiday that honors Dr. Martin Luther King. He was born January 15th, 1929. He was assassinated April 4, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. He was just 39 years old. While Dr. King is primarily remembered as a civil rights leader, he also championed the cause of the poor and organized the Poor People’s Campaign to address issues of economic justice. Dr. King was also a fierce critic of U.S. foreign policy and the Vietnam War. We play his “Beyond Vietnam” speech, which he delivered at New York’s Riverside Church on April 4, 1967, as well as his last speech, “I Have Been to the Mountain Top,” that he gave on April 3, 1968, the night before he was assassinated. January 18, 2009 : On Today's show I am changing the format to share something special with you in Honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity. While we usually think of healing in terms of the individual or the family, more indigenous cultures believe for a human to be healthy you must address not only the body mind spirit but also the community and earth. Today, to honor the life and work of Dr King, Iâd like to address community by playing a Tribute to Martin Luther King given by Alice Walker. This was originally recorded at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium in 2002. This is a very moving piece and I would like to get right into it. So I can share as much of it as possible with you, it has been edited for time. This is Alice Walker, speaking in Santa Cruz CA.
